The world’s first fumé enamel dial is the result of a technique painstakingly developed over several years, born out of a happy accident. We released our first iteration in 2019 and recently refined the process to further exaggerate its smoky effect and add depth to the outer perimeter.
The case and typography use the same cartography-inspired design language as the Model 1 Opaque – with the typographic design stemming from old maps of the Scottish Highlands, encapsulating the detail, precision and craft of the brand’s ethos. This inspiration also informed the hands, which resemble traditional compass needles.
This smoky grey takes its name from the painter William Payne, who invented and popularised the practice of combining coloured paint pigments to create a deep, nuanced alternative to the colour black. As this namesake suggests, the Fumé Payne's Grey changes depending on the light: sometimes appearing to have silver, purple or blue undertones.
The silver dial blank is stamped to have a domed top, which allows the enamel to have greater depth – and therefore depth of colour – around the outer edge. We developed the technique after noticing a gradient effect in a dial that had accidentally been warped in the kiln.

The company also features custom-drawn, cartographically-inspired numerals and uses reliable Swiss mechanical movements, appealing to watch collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate traditional craftsmanship and a distinct Scottish design heritage. AnOrdain's limited production, artistry, and growing popularity have led to significant demand and a waiting list for its highly coveted timepieces.
